If you have time for just one hike in the Hermagor region, make it this one: the Garnitzenklamm. Over millennia the Garnitzen stream has carved one of Carinthia's most impressive natural wonders into the limestone of the Carnic Alps. And the best part: the gorge starts right on the edge of Möderndorf, just five minutes' walk from the Kaufhaus Wiedenig.

At a glance

  • Length: ~4.5 km (one way through the gorge)
  • Elevation gain: ~500 m
  • Duration: 2–3 hours up, 1.5–2 hours down
  • Difficulty: moderate – sure-footed, some steep sections and stairs
  • Open: May to October
  • Entry: small maintenance fee (~4 € adult, kids free)
  • Dogs: on a leash

What to expect

4.5 km long, in places only a few metres wide and over 200 m deep. The trail crosses more than 30 bridges and walkways and runs along countless waterfalls and plunge pools. Thanks to the rushing water and shaded cliffs, it usually feels noticeably cooler inside the gorge than out in the sun.

Highlights

  • The dramatic entrance gorge – the first kilometre is the most spectacular
  • The vertical "Stiegele" cliff face, over 200 m tall
  • Interactive discovery trail for children in the upper section
  • Countless waterfalls and plunge pools along the entire trail
Photo tip: late morning, when sunlight falls vertically into the gorge.

Three variants depending on fitness

1. Short gorge walk (1 hour)

From the entrance to the first major waterfall (~1 km) and back. Doable with younger children (from age ~4).

2. Classic hike (3–4 hours)

The full gorge up to the upper exit and back the same way or along the forest road. Recommended from school age.

3. Loop with forest road return (4–5 hours)

Gorge up, then back down on the quieter forest road for a complete loop.

With kids

An adventure from about age 5. Steep stairs and narrow walkways – all well secured, but watch your step. No strollers, baby carriers fine, sturdy shoes essential.

Arrival and parking

From the Kaufhaus Wiedenig, walk to the entrance in 10 minutes. By car: large paid car park at the entrance (~3 €).

What to wear

Thanks to the water and shaded cliffs, the gorge usually feels noticeably cooler than outside – a light layer is a good idea, especially in early summer and autumn. After rain the walkways can be slippery, so good tread is essential.

Where to eat

The closest stop directly from the gorge is the inn at the Klamm entrance in Möderndorf – a great way to finish the hike. To round off the day at a traditional alpine hut, drive or hike up to one of the mountain pastures above the valley. We've collected the most beautiful ones in our dedicated post about the Gail valley huts.

Nature protection

The Garnitzenklamm sits in the Carnic Alps Geopark and is protected. Stay on the trails, take rubbish with you, leave plants and animals undisturbed. The rare ice-age flower Wulfenia grows here under strict protection.

Verdict

The Garnitzenklamm is one of Carinthia's most impressive natural experiences. Whether as a half-day family adventure or a full hiking day with a hut stop – the gorge impresses young and old.
