If you ask around ski forums for the sunniest, friendliest big ski area in Austria, one name keeps coming up: Nassfeld. Right on the Austrian-Italian border, Carinthia's largest ski area combines 110 km of slopes, an exceptional microclimate and a Mediterranean atmosphere you don't expect in the high Alps.

We live right here – the Kaufhaus Wiedenig in Hermagor is just 15 minutes by car from the base station. This guide covers everything you need: slopes, lifts, lift pass prices, arrival, hut tips and a few local secrets.

At a glance

  • Slopes: ~110 km
  • Lifts: 30 (incl. 8 six-seater chairs and 2 gondolas)
  • Altitude: 600 to 2,020 m
  • Difficulty: 30 km blue, 50 km red, 30 km black
  • Season: early December to mid-April
  • Longest run: over 7 km (Tröpolach descent)
  • Snow reliability: high – thanks to microclimate and 100% snow-making

The microclimate: why Nassfeld has so much snow

The Carnic Alps act as a weather divide. While the rest of Austria experiences dry föhn or high-pressure conditions, Nassfeld receives moist air masses from the Mediterranean that release as snow. The result: statistically one of Austria's most snow-reliable ski areas.

Slopes for every level

Beginners and families

Around the Tröpolach base station and on the Madritsche you'll find wide, gentle runs to learn on. Several fenced practice areas with conveyor belts and magic carpets make first turns safe. The BOBO kids' club with its penguin mascot looks after the little ones.

Intermediate cruisers

The long red runs on Gartnerkofel or around Watschiger Alm let you cruise for kilometres. Especially scenic: the "Sun loop" with views of the Carnic Alps and out to the Adriatic.

Experts

The notorious FIS run on Trogkofel is a real challenge. Off-piste fans find untracked snow around Madritschen – always with avalanche gear and ideally a guide.

Local tip: First chairs in the morning to the "Sonnenabfahrt" – perfect grooming, few people, best views.

Lift pass prices 2025/26 (estimates)

  • Day pass adult: ~67–74 €
  • 6-day pass: ~330–380 €
  • Children (up to 17): ~50% discount
  • Top Ski Pass Carnia: incl. neighbouring Italian areas, worth it from 4 days

Tip: significant early-bird discounts on the official Nassfeld site.

Best mountain huts

  • Watschiger Alm: classic Carinthian food, big sun terrace
  • Madritsche Hütte: lively, family-friendly
  • Sonnenalpe Plattner: Mediterranean touch – pasta at 1,500 m
  • Rifugio Vidonza: already in Italy but reachable on skis – authentic Italian
  • Tressdorfer Alm: quieter, traditional

Beyond skiing

Cross-country skiing along the Gail (200+ km of trails), tobogganing on the Pflegerstrecke, snowshoeing in the Carnic Alps, wellness at Aqua Trolls Nassfeld, après-ski on the Sonnenalpe.

Getting there

From the Kaufhaus Wiedenig in Möderndorf, the base station in Tröpolach is 15 minutes by car via the B90. A free ski bus runs regularly – included with your lift pass.

Local tip: off-peak is great

The main season around Christmas and Easter can be busy. Mid-January to early February and March offer the best conditions: stable snow, mild temperatures, less crowding and better prices.

Verdict

Nassfeld is a ski area with character: big enough for advanced skiers, family-friendly for beginners, Mediterranean-relaxed and snow-reliable. Combined with the unbeatable Carinthian factor – good food, hospitality and sunshine – it's a delightful alternative to the busier Tyrolean resorts.
