Lake Pressegger See: Carinthia's warmest bathing lake in drinking-water quality

If you come to Hermagor in summer, there is really only one destination: Lake Pressegger See. With water temperatures up to 28 °C in high summer and an officially certified drinking-water quality, it's one of the most beautiful bathing lakes in Carinthia – and the Alps overall.
From the Kaufhaus Wiedenig in Möderndorf, it's just 10 minutes by car to the lakeside beach. Here is everything you need to know.
At a glance
- Size: ~55 ha
- Max depth: 14 m
- Altitude: 555 m
- Water temperature: up to 28 °C in summer
- Water quality: drinking-water quality
- Slow trail: 6 km around the shore
Why is it so warm?
The lake is relatively shallow and fed by underground springs and small tributaries. A dense reed belt surrounds most of the shore, acting as a natural filter that keeps the water crystal clear.
Because of its shallow depth (averaging 6 m), the lake warms quickly in summer. On sunny July and August days it regularly climbs above 26 °C, occasionally reaching 28 °C.
The Hermagor lakeside beach
The main access is the Strandbad Hermagor on the north shore. Family-friendly facilities include:
- Large lawns with shade from mature trees
- Sandy beach and several jetties
- Kids' pool with shallow entry
- Beach volleyball courts
- Pedal and rowing boat rental
- Diving platform and water playground
- Restaurant and snack stands
- Clean toilets and showers
Family tip: there's a large fenced toddler area with knee-deep, warm water – ideal for the smallest guests.
The slow trail: 6 km around the lake
A well-marked, flat trail circles the shore – alternating between wooden walkways through reeds, light forest and open meadows. 1.5 hours, suitable with strollers, with several lookout points to spot herons, kingfishers and (with patience) beavers.
Water sports
For nature-protection reasons motorboats are not allowed. Instead: SUP, pedal boats, rowing boats, and swimming (marked routes).
Practical tips
- Best time: July and August for warmest water. May/June and September for fewer people.
- Parking: several paid parking lots near the beach (~5 € day ticket).
- Beach entry: ~6 € adult, family rates available.
- Dogs: not allowed in the main beach but several dog-friendly spots around the lake.
- Sun protection: bring an umbrella – shade can be scarce midsummer.

Lake Pressegger See is one of the best-kept summer secrets in the Alps. While tourists crowd the better-known lakes (Wörthersee, Faaker See), here you'll still find a quiet spot between reeds and mountains – even in high season.
