Rafting on the Gail: a whitewater adventure that ends right in Möderndorf

If you only know Hermagor and the Gail valley from skiing or hiking, you may be missing one of the region's best summer experiences: rafting on the Gail. It's one of Austria's most scenic and yet least crowded whitewater rivers – and the best part for our guests: the exit point of many tours is right here in Möderndorf, just a few minutes' walk from the Kaufhaus Wiedenig.
Why the Gail is perfect for rafting
The Gail rises in East Tyrol, flows through the entire Gail valley and joins the Drau at Villach. Along the way, calm passages alternate with lively whitewater sections. The grade rarely climbs too high – which makes the Gail ideal for beginners, families and mixed groups, while still being lively enough to keep experienced paddlers happy.
What sets the Gail apart from many other rafting rivers: glass-clear water, an almost untouched riverbank with alder and floodplain forest, and a panorama of the Carnic Alps that you rarely get to enjoy from a boat.
The main tours at a glance
Family rafting (from about age 8)
Calmer stretches with small whitewater passages of grade I–II. Duration: around 2–3 hours including equipment and safety briefing. A perfect blend of adventure and safety.
Classic half-day tour
The most popular option: 12–15 river kilometres with sportier passages of grade II–III. Duration: 3–4 hours. For active adults and teenagers from about 12.
More demanding sections
At higher water levels (mostly in early summer with the snowmelt), more vigorous sections become runnable. Providers offer these as extensions or as dedicated tours.
Tip: water levels vary strongly with the season. May and June give the most whitewater; August offers the calmer, sun-drenched runs.
What's included
- Full neoprene kit (wetsuit, neoprene shoes, jacket if needed)
- Helmet and life jacket
- Paddle and boat
- Safety briefing and a qualified guide in every boat
- Photo service with most providers
The big advantage: tour exit right in Möderndorf
Many providers set their tour exit directly in Möderndorf. For our guests that means: after the tour, a short walk back to the Kaufhaus Wiedenig, a warm shower, dry clothes and a relaxed afternoon on the terrace or in the garden. No long shuttle bus, no detour – a level of comfort you rarely get as a rafting guest.
Providers in the region
Hermagor and the surrounding area are home to several established outdoor companies offering rafting on the Gail. We recommend asking in advance or on arrival, since tours vary with water level and weather, and bookings are expected ahead of time.
You'll find a current list of local providers on our Activities page – we list outdoor centres, mountain guides and sports schools from the region.
Practical tips
- What to bring: swimwear (worn under the wetsuit), a towel, an old pair of shoes (some providers supply neoprene shoes), sunscreen.
- Valuables: better leave them at the apartment. Phones, watches and wallets should not come on the boat.
- Booking: reserve 1–2 days in advance, earlier in peak season.
- Weather: rafting goes ahead in light rain – you'll be wet anyway. Tours are cancelled in thunderstorms or extreme water levels.
- Swimming: swimming skills are required.
Season and arrival
The rafting season on the Gail runs from May to September. The put-in is usually further upstream (e.g. Kötschach-Mauthen or Kirchbach), with a shuttle bus organised by the provider. The exit on the Gail at Möderndorf is just a few minutes' walk from the Kaufhaus Wiedenig.
A rafting holiday in the Gail valley
Stay right in Möderndorf, do a rafting tour in the morning, head to lake Pressegger See or the Garnitzenklamm in the afternoon. The Kaufhaus Wiedenig is the perfect base for an active summer.
